The Face-ache Family

Somehow we've managed to all come down with a cold this week. Poor little Arch was first. His came on whilst we were in the desert-like atmosphere of my Mum and Nan's house on Friday. My Nan is 97 and feels the cold so the house is always seriously hot and dry. Archie generally starts howling to be let out of his clothes within 5 minutes of arriving, so when Mum pointed out that his nose was running, I assumed it was a reaction to the heat. Mum helpfully suggested that he might be teething, which I just pooh-poohed: after all, we've been thinking that he's teething since he was 10 weeks old and nothing has materialised yet!

When we got back home, it became clear that the poor babe did, indeed, have a cold. We braced ourselves for the inevitable interrupted nights sleep. It was a long night full of nose-wiping and dummy replacing and I found myself also with a cold by the next morning.

Sunday found Phil waking up with a cold also. By this point, we were wondering what Archie had been up to, as we appeared to have caught our colds off of him. Although, still snuffly, he was pretty perky again. I felt like I was dying, and Phil knew that he would feel the same within 24 hours. Both of us were suffering, in addition, with untreated root canals - bizarrely enough, the same tooth on different sides of the face.

Archie, who had been off his food for a few days, suddenly had an enormous appetite and was clearing plates of food like eating was going out of fashion. Phil discovered the real reason for his lack of appetite whilst bathing him that evening.

On the one occasion we hadn't explained away his restlessness, sleeplessness or lack of appetite on teething, our little boy had actually cut his first tooth.
